History says that Damão was a chance discovery of Portuguese captain, Diogo de Mello when his ill-fated caravel was literally washed ashore in July 1523 following one of those violent cyclones typical of these waters.

Though the imposing centuries-old Portuguese forts, churches, chapels and buildings have withstood the test of time – all 450 years of them – it is the culture that breathes life into them – a heady blend of Portuguese and Indian cultures which, is multicultural, multilingual, multiracial, multi-religious… yet, always in beautiful melodic harmony.
